I also remember hearing Tony on BBC Radio London in the mornings doing his Soul show. We have reasonable reception of the station here on 94.9 - now BBC London of course.

Absolutely right - radio presenters really are just opeining and closing channels. The input levels are pretty much correct for jingles, feeds, phones, music etc.

Radio 1 had the first of the industry standard mixing desks in the BBC. Partly because the guest DJs couldn't handle the BBC spec and partly beacuse they were cheaper.

Here's a bit of trivia: He did weekdays at BBC Radio London, and weekends at Radio 1 & 2 (I believe it was a shared programme, but might be wrong), so was actually working 7 days a week.

He was on the slippery slope out of daytime Radio 1 because of / after that, but I also think it was probably the right time anyway, as Radio 1 has to keep churning over to new talent.

To me though, he was at his absolute best mid-1980s doing the mid-morning show on BBC Radio London. The station played soul music, the music of the time, and took frivolous calls to air.
