You can read the reason on http://www.iradio.be/news/article.php?id=161252&group=nl.media.radio

So far as I can conclude now is this transmitter switched out due to financial problems. Who of you will search in English news-fora to find the exact reason?

Sorry Nico, nothing in the main-stream press about this, is it really off then?

Hi, Eric. I read on a Dutch newsgroup that BigL is NO longer able to pay the expensive high price (35% raised in a year) of the oil which is needed for its 1395 kHz-transmitter. Equal as the former offshore radiostations this transmitter uses NO landbased electricity but generator-oil for transmitting. Greetings of Nico from Gouda, the Netherlands.

Hi Nico, I saw some comments on a Dutch group with something to do with environmental issues. I guess you could always try to get an answer from the station? Sorry I can't be more help.

Eric

This is what Mike said just before Noon BST yesterday: “Well regretfully because we have environmental issues and various * location problems in Holland with the AM transmitter* , at midday we’re going to be temporarily closing that down; we don’t know how long for but we hope to be back as soon as possible, louder, bigger, brighter and better. We’ll be remaining online around the world at bigl.co.uk 0190 on Sky, but for now 1395 AM at midday will be closing down.”

The both asterisks in this text have I self added for to underline this piece of his message.

And on http://blogs.rnw.nl/medianetwork/big-ls-dutch-mediumwave-transmitter-on-1395-khz-switched-off you can read the following message

Andy Duncan August 2nd, 2008 – 17:07 UTC

I suspect that Big L and Broadcast Partners, may be in discussions with Belgian authorities regarding their possible use of the now vacant 540 kHz frequency.
Certainly a move of the 50 Kw Nautel transmitter from it’s present position at Trintelhaven to Belgium for use on 540 kHz, would greatly improve signal coverage into the UK market.

My final conclusion is now that BigL after some time will resume its transmissons but now from a transmitter in Belgium on the 540 kHz, or on the 1188 kHz, or on the 1512 kHz AM!

Only the future will tell us this! Greetings of Nico from Gouda, the Netherlands.

One suspects that BigL's financial difficulties may lie more behind the silence on AM although I sincerely hope not. A return to AM would be most welcome now there is very little on there for alternative radio/ rock fans/ old anoraks like me. France Bleu (Isle De France 864Khz) is now my music station of choice- France Bleu for f*ck's sake!

1188 would be hopeless around here as it's too close to 1197 used here in East Anglia by ''Virgin – one song for every 15 minutes of ads – Radio'' (Cambridge). If Big L do return, and get the 540, I hope they do something about the modulation – the Belgians always sounded like they were whispering on there to me.

I wouldn't take a lot of notice, I think the Windup Merchants are crawling out of the woodwork again!!

Hello everyone. On http://www.iradio.be/news/article.php?id=161356&group=nl.media.radio
you can read in Dutch that the 1395 kHz will stay silent and also that BigL not will come back on air on a Belgium or Irish AM frequency, and also will NO returm on a FM-frequency. Greetings of Nico from Gouda, the Netherlands.

No Big L, and no board, the page seems to have vanished. I was going to read what twaddle was being generated today after what was posted yesterday, but, its gone, 404 error.

Hello everyone. Read now http://www.radiofreak.nl/nieuws.php?id=7550
Nico.

Big L staakt uitzendingen via Nederlandse 1395 AM

Erm what does it say?????????????

Nico.

You can read in the message in this link (among others) the following sentence "De vergunning is officieel in handen van Quality Radio-eigenaar Ruud Poeze". This is NOT correct because Ruud stated in an answer of him in a Dutch newsgroup that BigL itself is owner of the license for transmitting on the 1395 kHz AM instead of Ruud Poeze, read:

"Ruud is en blijft eigenaar van die frequentie".
Answer of Ruud Poeze on this sentence:
Nee, geen eigenaar frequentie, is van BigL zelf".

Well if they do – good luck. Must be some deep pockets somewhere, that's all I can say.
