Stunning idea

Eric

That isn't as daft as I thought it might be. If we accept that Radio 2 is aimed at Radio 1's audience of 15–20 years ago, then that is a real starter as I suspect many of the younger R2 listeners would have grown up on a diet of dance music in the late 80's/early 90's.

Great idea!

Nominations for greatest dance record, anyone? Mine would be the first record I ever bought way back in 1962 and still fills the dancefloors at parties - Little Eva's "The Locomotion".  Incidentally the second record I bought was also in that vein, Chris Montez' "Let's dance"!

Still dancing after all these years...

That sort of begs the question: Which was the earliest 'dance record'? As in what we currently think of as 'dance' of course rather than going back to the waltz era!

Heh heh. Of that ilk, I always remember Caroline staggering back on air in 1989 after the raid and playing on quite high rotation Ride on Time – Black Box. Unashamedly fond of hearing it being 'jocked' by Peter Chicago to whom musically it was very probably a bit of a mystery.

And, on the theme of history being changed, doesn't the video include some attractive slim lady dancing about and miming to what was actually the voice of what some might unkindly call 'some huge fat bird' who actually did the singing?

Correct.

See? What recall I have for a 19 year old who was only born in 1989!

I'll get my coat.

OK, my pitch for 'oldest dance record' is
I Feel Love by Donna Summer, 1977
and Wikipedia appears to agree with me http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Feel_Love

Yeah, thanks for that. There was an unusually good write up alongside the video too, basically saying that a slim attractive lip-synced to the original fat bird. Well, nearly.

However, I did just get a, "Ha ha, wait till I tell [...] that you were listening to 1980s music!" and my protestations that it was for research purposes were not believed.

Anyway, loved the excessively complex techniques they used to put together the video! We've come a long way since then it seems.

No it doesn't, the whole quote is:

"Before "I Feel Love", most disco recordings were backed by acoustic orchestras. Although such mid 1970s bands as Kraftwerk had pioneered all-electronic music, it has been said that this song is the first disco-style song recorded with an entirely synthesized backing track, and has been enormously influential in the development of disco, electronica and techno music, thanks to Giorgio Moroder's innovative production. In particular, the song popularised the insistent, robotic bass line, which has been frequently imitated ever since."

(my highlighting above)

Dance music of varying sorts has been around since the year dot.

I do seem to remember a newspaper article about it at the time, where legal action was threatened, and eventually the true story did come out.
I mean, even if you listen to the track, it is quite obvious to the old ear drums that it is a fat bird singing!

Yeah it is amazing to think that during the MTV/Music Box mid 80's era we thought we had cracked it with pop music videos! Now when you watch most of them they seem so dated compared to today's vids! But I'm sure if music vids are still going in 20 years today's will look dated in comparison!

Well Christopher as one of the people who sometimes contributes to Garry's board to answer a question if I can help, but referred to by Steve Martin on this board as 'people needing to be worshipped for what they once did many years ago, and failed to do more recently',( I haven't actually failed at anything recently!). I can help you out here. 'Ride On Time' was played by Peter to wind up PM who hated and despised the song when played prior to the raid. So it was just his impish devilment I suspect.

1920s dance music

Dance music became enormously popular during the 1920s. Night clubs were frequented by large numbers of people at which a form of jazz, which was characterized by fancy orchestras with strings instruments and complex arrangements, became the standard music at clubs. A particularly popular dance was the fox-trot. At the time this music was simply called jazz, although today people refer to it as "white jazz" or big band. The late 1960s saw the rise of soul and R&B music which used lavish orchestral arrangements. These orchestras would gradually develop a new form of dance music, which came to be known as disco.

Wasn't a Charlston dance song remixed in around 1993/4 - 'Doop' or something like that?

Quoting a previous DAVE RICHARDS 'JACK SPARROW' contribution:-

referred to by
Steve Martin on this board as 'people needing to be worshipped for what
they once did many years ago, and failed to do more recently',

a) Steve Martin never said that. I said that.

b) I wasn't referring to you. I don't even know who you are or what you be doing these days or those days!

'Ride On Time' was played by Peter to wind up PM who hated and despised
the song when played prior to the raid. So it was just his impish
devilment I suspect.

Aha. No wonder I used to really like Chicago. :-)
