Quoting a previous Les Wires contribution:-
Many yoofs of today will enjoy music from the 80s in fact
the style between the 80s and today isn't greatly different.
Each style that is new from each era does carry on, and a lot of the 80s stuff is not allowed to go away because of the control people like Simon Cowell have over its constant regurgitation through the pretend gameshows like the X Factor, etc. However, the 80s regurgitation stuff mainly appeals to pre-teens and their older white middle class mothers. Meanwhile, most kids are more privately into music genres that weren't around 20 years ago, despite maybe having grown from genres that were.
There are
songs in todays charts which would have been at home in the late 70s/80s
charts.
Again, that's because of Simon Cowell et al. 'Singles' that register for the charts are still (as they always were) dominated by the hyped 'product', and the people who are hyping are no longer targeting the yoof age markets that used to be targeted 20 years ago. Instead they are after the middle aged band because there are more of them and so they are likely to sell more product.
Kids will be drawn to listening to a lot of what they hear their parents listening to (hence why they'll listen to the oldies) as well as breaking off on their own tangents.
However, by far the greater number of yoof are listening to their own music genres that their parents don't really understand.
