Topfield and Humax freeview boxes both have USB sockets allowing files to be transfered to a PC.

Alternatively, a DVB-T card or USB dongle for a media centre PC will record all the files as a .DVR_MS file which is an MPEG2 file with embedded metadata. There are lots of programs which will do the simple conversion to a .mpg file. Most of these cards come with their own software which usually records the broadcasts straight to .mpg files, but with a more limited PVR facility.

The third option (again for freeview) is to get a hard disc recorder with built in DVD drive. They will allow you to edit the programme, and then burn the thing straight to DVD, all in digits.

None of this is much of a help if you're a sky+ exploitee though.
