I know I keep banging on about the furure of radio and the Anorak Future, And I feel maybe i'm being a bit over the top with the traditional notion of radio.
In the 30s, 40s and 50s it was the radio gram, we all gathered round to listen. the 60s saw the transistor and car radio. we became portable. the 70s 80s and 90s were the addition of FM DAB and now DRM. satellite radio and every other form of frequency salvation. Now we have a Revolution...Online radio. Ok so many staions just play music, no chat. But that will change..
The delivery of Audio will be online. satellite is still in the running but only because SKY has a financial interest. the more stations the more cash they get.
Now there may be over 6000 stations online and to filter your favorites is hard work but with the changes ahead we about to see a complete revoltion, even bigger than in the 60s with the transistor portable radio.
Yes its not traditional. Its not RF, Ok its what some believe to be narrowcasting not broadcasting..But i'm afraid to say its the future.
As a station you will have as much chance as the BBC to reach an audience.
As a listener you will have as much choice as you will ever need. Yes it does cost at the moment. But plans are already being devoloped to offer an Internet radio for your car at no additional cost than the purchase price of the Radio. Sony/Ericson, Pioneer, Nokia and Phillips are devoloping inbuilt Internet radios for your car. the same companies are thinking of doing the same with a tradtional Transistor radio but with internet access built in. Not from your wireless Hub in your hame but anywhere worldwide..Nokia see it as a way to make mobile communication beyond just one handset per person. Look out for the Nokia Internet Portable Radio...
Now at the moment there are thousands of stations online. The whole question of Royalties and control will start to raise its head soon. But Internet radio is the only form of "Free radio" at the moment besides illegal traditional RF broadcasting.
So get your stations online now.
Join the revolution.....
