early 80s it rose again to possibly 3 million

peak. 963 was powerful at times and there was something new on the
airwaves. Then Laser 558 smashed its audience to bits. after Laser it
would have got back about 2 million only to plumit when the power
dropped and the Mast fell down. trickling to a few thousand Anaraks like
us... the rest is decline and history..

But listening now i hear many requests from all around the world. and
its growing every day. not many stations can say that from listener
emails alone. i agree potential is not reality. And I know not everyone
is happy with the output. but lets face it. Caroline has always had the
complainer. Rock station, pop station, Europes 1st and only album
station.. etc etc.

This radio Caroline is different. maybe i'm more of an anorak than I
think..

I always thought that Carolines best audience figures were post laser, certainly Caroline 558 was very popular in my area and was heard playing in Taxis and shops where as before only Radio 1 local radio or Laser would be heard.

Even after the mast came down you would still hear Caroline 558 playing occassionally, but it was the signal that let it down and not the programming.

I also liked the overnight Alternative Caroline 819, though I never heard that playing anywhere apart from my radio.

I used to really like listening to Caroline back then, they were good years for me (just like Caroline in the 1960's were good years for older people). I would love it if the station returned to that format, but it wouldn't attract advertising and would probally upset the current subscriber base so it will never happen.

Final thought though, if Radio 2 is the most listened to station, commercial radio must be doing something drasticly wrong.
