Oscar said which would be fine if it were not for the fact that Caroline in the 1980's was utter shite.

I would rate the return of Caroline as the biggest disappointment ever in Radio for me, all the promise and it just turned out right from the start it was just one BIG wet kipper, perhaps it should never have returned, then the good memories of Caroline of the 60's would have been upper in everyone's mind, I only just remember Caroline North, but that was and will remain the Real Caroline and great Radio along with RNI, Laser 558 (Laser Hot Hits was another Caroline 70's/80's failure) and then finally Nova.

Caroline was always the worst offshore station after its return (except for Radio Seagull which was even more dreadful), and always made far worse by the Loving Awareness theme and the overplayed Lotto 249 adverts.
Which other station has ever made a commercial success in play obscure album tracks, or allowing DJs to play their favourite records to the exclusion of anything elese?
Whereas I can instantly remember about five DJs from Laser, the only Caroline one from this era that I can remember is Dixie Peach ) probably because he was black and had a stupid name).
I could hear a very weak station on 1278 kHz at 08:30 this morning in my car close to Birmingham Airport. Just before 8:30, it played a series of adverts including one for skip hire and then played the song that goes "January ... sick and tired you've been leaning on me .. don't go .. don't go". Could that have been Redsands?

I agree. Caroline during the 80s should of had sponsorship from Prozac. It required a cattle prod to try and make it sound alive, my biggest memories of both Caroline and Laser are from the summer of '84. Caroline was tuned into as a back up to Laser on the occassions Laser was off air. In my opinion, they should of swapped ships.
After the demise of Laser and Caroline occupying 558, I found it hard to listen as it gave me bouts of depression and I found myself tuning in to Capitol Radio instead. Laser Hot Hits was a very poor imitation.
For those who wave the Caroline flag and criticize the tribute stations of today for reminising should remember, the Caroline of the 80s was doing exactly the same thing.

I must be in the minority here then. I loved Caroline 83/84. For me it was a great music alternative to stations playing top 40 music. Musically it was doing something different. I will admit it lacked something on the presentation style, but I think that is because it was all about music, at a time when most stations were full of blah blah blah!
I'm probably also in a minority when it comes to Laser, most people seem to think it was the "bees knees", but I just thought it was "poor man's" Nova! I much preferred the English and Irish voices on Nova and Sunshine to the Yanks on Laser!

From what I can recall Laser was great and gave not only radio in this country a good kick up the @r$e that it needed, it also did the same for Caroline as they actually started broadcasting a loose format that tightened things up. I can't remember the exact time but there were some good capable presenters on there like Johnny Lewis, Kevin Turner.
To be fair on hindsight Caroline was always a hit or miss affair throughout her history, occasionally a Tony Allen would come along but for the majority they were learning there trade with no real proper strong PC. I suppose to be honest I listened to Caroline most of the time as it was unpredictable, it was like the first reality show on the radio, were they going to be there, were they not the format was secondary which is probably why no other station landbased has ever captured my imagination and probably never will.
Steve
Looking at my last post I realise I come across as a real anorak, which of course I am, more so when I was young, free and single. It got me thinking to what were the best shows I listened to and went out of my way to listen to. I have listed a few below anyone else got shows that they would try to make sure they listened to.
Charlie Wolf in the evenings Laser 558
Sunday Joint, Radio Caroline 79/80 Sunday evenings between 8 and 10
Robbie Vincent – BBC Radio London's Late Night London linking up with WMCA New York every second Wednesday between 11pm and midnight.
Radio Sweden’s Saturday show Saturdays 11:30pm – Midnight
Radio Netherlands – Johnathan Marks Media Network? Thursdays 16:30?
Noel Edmonds Breakfast show on Radio One
There’s a few to get us started,
Steve
And now the very very latest news about the "Norderney"!

Pirates of the Airwaves – Documentary
The activities of non-licenced radio stations presently broadcasting throughout West Yorkshire, following Leeds station Radio Frequency. These latter-day pirates have fallen foul of media regulator Ofcom for their refusal to end their transmissions. Tony Blackburn, himself a radio pirate in the 1960's, offers an insight into this type of lawbreaking, with comment from a Scarborough MP who set up his own station 40 years ago.
That can only be Wilf Proudfoot of Radio 270,
Not sure if it will be of much interest to us as it seems to be about the current FM Pirates,
For those of you who live outside of the Yorkshire area and have Sky the tuning details for Add Channels are,
Frequency (GHz) 10981 H Symbol Rate 22.0 FEC 5/6

On http://www.norderney.nl/logboek.html you can read the following Dutch text. Nico.
Zodra
ik meer weet meldt ik me weer
groet
Hans Knot.
