When Caroline returned in '83 there were stories that it was funded by IRA money circulating which was ridiculous.

I always thought that the reason for the raid was the start of commercial AM broadcasting in the Netherlands. The Dutch had thought of raiding the Ross in the autumn of 85 and emergency tapes were prepared on board. The Dutch authorities bottled out as Lloyds of London confirmed Panamanian registery. In 1989 the situation was different as Lloyds could not give a definititve answer to this question. Countries such as Panama and Liveria were notorious in keeping records up to date - the Dutch beleived the registration had lapsed - which it had - thus ensuring action.

The Communicator on the other had had been re-registered from Panama to I think Puerto Cortes - Puerto Rica - so any raid would have been another Paradijs for them. The Nannell was fully registered too although the crew re-named the ship Mia Migo. I can't tell you if the name on the ships papers had been changed.

The Ross's protection had lapsed but the crew on the Volans lost all legal protection for their actions once it left Dutch territorial waters. Technically it was a 'privateer'. The DTI crew were observers with no instructions to board and should not have interrogated the crew.

In retospect legal action should have been taken against the individuals on the Volans and the Landward.

There is no question that the Landward Crew felt they were pushing their luck, offering interviews to the crew, although those interviews had been offered on a voluntary basis. I remember vividly both the Volans and Landward dissapeared from the scene as soon as it was recognised that the Fish Boat was on the horizon. The Dutch Guys on the Volans were more conversational and there was no question of interrogation, any information coming from the crew would have been voluntary, although they were more confrontational and edgy given the circumstances.

Richards Butler, then acting on behalf of Radio Caroline did suggest this course of action.

'There would be a license with Caroline's name on it, but we don't doubt it will be back!'

'Chicago and I and a few others then arranged big time meetings with the then Radio Authority at Ronan's request. It really was a goer, but it needed the proper application by law. Unfortunately, the station wasn't able to get its act together and so never actually applied'.

Well Christopher, I can assure you we had some heated arguments internally over that very issue, if Ronan sanctioned those meetings, it was vehemently denied, but I am not here to open old wounds.

Quoting a previous DAVE RICHARDS 'JACK SPARROW' contribution:-

I quite specifically recall being charged with the responsibility of exploring with the Radio Authority what was on offer with regard to UK wide licences. I was called a few days later for a progress report, was moaned at because the initial meeting had not yet taken place, and told my brief now included getting an apology for the raid from the Queen!

In context though, as you may recall, he had a habit of sending 4 different people off in 4 different directions all with a brief to deliver completely opposing results, or setting more than one person off on a single task. Each person trotting off in their direction would usually be doing so completely unaware that others had been sent off in an opposing direction, because as usual everybody was told to keep it from everybody else. Equally, whenever a goal with about to be reached he'd move the goal-posts to try to get more and more. But, hey, lovely man.

......Max Rusheden is off, he is exiting the building! The guy Talksport thought could replace James Whale is finally leaving. Being a night time hawk I couldn't stand the politically correct, namby pamby, safe show this guy puts on as a gig. It's like listening to Readers Digest on radio. I don't know if it's true that Ian Collins  has taken this spot but it can't be worse than the diabolical nonsense broadcadst from 7-10pm on Talksport recently, even Ash sounds bored to tears. MR seems to attract 'aunty type' boring callers who want to discuss flower arrangements and boiled sweets. Right now it's like listening to National LBC.

Has anybody heard this tripe being broadcast on national commercial radio?

'There would be a license with Caroline's name on it, but we don't doubt it will be back!'

'Caroline' was out dated in its 80's return, it clearly didn't work, why have a Legit license then even more so now? Caroline died in the 70's, it's 80's plastic copy wasn't a touch on what it was. The 80's Caroline was just a tribute station, a 'wanna be' Caroline. I'd rather slit my wrists than listen to the poop eminating from the Ross Revenge back in the 80's and thought it was bland and boring with presenters who needed a colanic errigation to sound alive, even compared to Radio 1 or Laser Funf Funf Acht. At least Laser had personality. Get over it guys, Caroline is the equivalent of buying a plastic car kit of the original car. It's like buying a plastic policeman's helmet from a souvenir shop in Victoria, it's not the real deal.

What's all the fuss about? Caroline's legend is a little over bloated, if it was anything it would change with the times and would still be a recognised brand today. Caroline is as popular as calling your baby girl Caroline Today. get over it, what ever your part is / was, simple fact is today, no one gives a toss. It's like the t*ssrs who want to revive Laser, radio London or RNI.... Move on!

On the Planet Rock website,

'At long last I’m delighted to be able to announce that Planet Rock’s future is now secure. We have been purchased by life long rock and radio fan Malcolm Bluemel and his consortium supported by our very own Tony Iommi, Ian Anderson , Gary Moore, and Fish, saving Planet Rock from certain closure.

In a deal finalised earlier today Malcolm takes control of the station with immediate effect, there will be no break in transmission or changes in programming.'
