I still believe you need a lot more dough than some of the figures mentioned in the past.
A juicy 50 KW AM/MW with a decent ship with a broadcast fit out and lot's of barrels of oil
– my estimate would be around 1 to 2 million UKP.
Now for that kind of money or even 500K – 1M you could set up a damn good Internet/Sky/Sat station and broadcast 24/7 without the threat of being slammed into dock by the agents of misery. Plus your carbon footprint would be a hell of a lot less than something out at sea.
Offshore radio is great but the cost ain't much fun.
If you are seriously willing to put money into broadcasting and you want it to be real for more than a day then venture into either the big boys league (buy up shares in the PLC companies) or setup your own LBB (Low Budget Broadcaster).

Oooops, forgot about them Giles, they must be on a par with the Caravanist and the school drop 'Chelsea Tractor' Muvver'z innit (sucks teeth)!
The Guff
Did any of you guys listen to him, if so, are you not missing him on Talk Sport? I see Moz Dee wanted to stamp his mark on TS, but what a cowardly way of doing it. It seems even Ofcom are shocked, especially since Ofcom hadn't even investigated it let alone come to any kind of judgement.
Before any lefties or libs start slating him for his right wing views, I'm more interested in how whale was dealt with, not his views, otherwise we'd have to bring up the amount of times 'Sweaty' Galloway has over stepped the mark on TS.
Politics and Radio aye! It's like an Arab, Plutonium & a Suitcase all in one British City.
Lots about this now. You can see pictures of the ship they are using

Hi All.Thanks for the link to the piccies for this vessel.Well! What do you know! The ship has watery wireless form built in:
http://www.offshore-radio.de/fleet/hoop.htm
I knew that Viking Standby had it up for sale last year;good to see it being used to keep offshore radio in the popular consciousness in 2008.It looks like Dr Martin has another link to add to his website! Lets all hope that the film is as big a hit as some of the others that this production house has done! Regards,
Jim.

I haven't written here much before, just enjoy the read, however I thought I'd reply to this one.
I don't think the following will do for what you're after as it's designed for WAV files and probably more for music, but it's excellent at finding the gap between tracks and then splitting the files. It applies the split immediately before the next track starts. In the past I've tried other software but it has applied the split to early so sometimes cuts the end of the previous track off (like when it's fading out).
I've used it a lot when I've recorded some of my old vinyl and cassettes onto the pc and then converted to MP3 files or burnt them to CD for listening in the car etc.
The splitting bit is freeware but you can upgrade and it does other stuff like take the hiss out or the crackles from old vinyl. I actually use other software to improve the sound quality and only use this to split the tracks.
It's simple software but effective.

Or…! You could set-up and maintain a string of high power pirate FM transmitters giving blanket coverage throughout some major towns and cities – far more likely to build a realistic audience. Well, dependant on the style of programming of course.

Welcome on board. Anorak Nation is small but perfectly formed because of the people who form it, of which you are now one!!
Hey, brilliant. I was recently looking for exactly this. I'd previously had problems with the 'split' occurring too early and then having to go back and adjust it manually, or do it from the far too complex Adobe Audition. Thanks for the heads-up!

Go to www.enigma846am.co.uk
Look. I did that, right, only to find out that disturbingly this character on your station named 'Badger' actually has a badger head, not a human one. There's a picture of this badger headed guy shaking Johnnie Walker's hand (Mr Walker must have thought he was on some extra high quality cocaine that day!). Then, there's a studio shot of him and he's no longer got a badger's head, but he is a chicken. I don't mean he's scared of something, I mean his head is that of a comedy chicken. (I'm definitely not on the cocaine, and they tell me industrial strength Viagra doesn't cause hallucinations so it can't be me, ok?)
I realise the station is called 'Enigma', but I'd not realised how much of an Enigma it really really is.
In fact, this is part of a disturbing trend. I was looking at Merseyland Alternative Radio's site only t'other day to discover to my shock that the gentlemen involved were all rampant oiled-up homosexuals.
I'm thinking I'm going to be too scared to listen!

Not really. They'll get torched by Ofcom once they've rattled into action. This is the only way they can possibly reduce the size of their torching.
I wonder if radio stations have indemnity insurance to cover Ofcom fines!

So then. Anybody in the Rock target area listening to it? Does it fill a need? What's the verdict from you old hairies?

Strewth, looked at the website – any station that has "gob on legs" aka
Mike "The Ego" Sweeney on its payroll won't get my vote.
Check him out here:
http://www.radiotoday.co.uk/news.php?extend.3375.2
– two links to interesting Youtube videos. Is he talking bollards or good rock sense? (See what I did there?)
I'm not into rock but will have a listen in the car on the way to the
supermarket later.
D'you know, I was looking at the schedule and baffled why one show started at 19:46 each day, and another one at 10:46 during the week. I was trying to make the frequency 106.1 into 10:46 and just couldn't get the significance. Well, blow me down it's because the Rock block show actually last 106.1 minutes. Geddit? No? Well, novelty an' all that, but I'm guessing nobody else will 'get it' either. The Rock block (ie the automation with no human) runs 09:00 – 10:46 weekdays and 18:00 – 19:46 every evening. That's 106.1 minutes, see? No?
All seems a bit daft. Radio programmers gawn mad, I tell you. Mad.

I agree with Alan here, Mick Sweeney as a bit of a shaft wrestler but the essence of what he is saying is true about the state of today's radio groups. The Excel Boys come first followed by the sales force, then the presenters, then the music and lastly followed up by the listener. Focus groups are an absolute waste, and are in general, mainly made up of fuddery old geezers who can just about turn their radios on let alone help format a station.
Thanks Chris for the links to those videos, I'll now be twitching all night and will stay well away from any radio for the next 24 hours incase I accidently get another dose of Mike Sweeney.

Having said that, I thought by default some stations had an emergency pot for 'accidental' slip ups in their publicity funds.
