What I can't work out with the BBC is how they paid £55 million more
than ITV when no one else bid?John
That's a strange one and i wonder if we will ever find the reason?
I have been looking around various F1 related discussion forums and there is some speculation that there may have been some collusion here between the two broadcasters,
ITV are only a couple of years into a five year contract with F1 but they are quite willing to drop it next year??
It seems the BBC did not even bid on the Champions League rights that ITV have just won??
Richard
Not being too synical about the BBC but I'll bet this years TV License fee on who's going to be the 'BBC's Sport Personality of the year this year'. They've paid enough for it so have got to do it haven't they? Good choice BBC - too clever for us license fee payers to figure out.
It really makes me laugh how people talk about the overcharge on F1 as if being overcharged 1p on a pack of fags or a pint.
Isn't it time to privatise the BBC or put the license fee on electricity usage as normal countries seem to do? Leave sport to the sports channels. The BBC as a programme maker is pretty competitive, it should focus on that rather than sport. If the BBC want a sports channel, stick commercials on it with loads of DOGS (On Screen Graphics), graphics with wooshy sound fx. Sorry, I find watching grannies pushing shopping trollies round ASDA more interesting than F1.

A funny little tale. Last night, I was at one of my regular Northern Soul venues, the Ritz Ballroom in Brighouse, Yorkshire. One of the guest DJs played this absolutely amazing track – one of the best things I'd heard in ages, an awesome piece of R&B. So I made my way onstage to ask the DJ about the record. Turns out it was Duffy's "Mercy"!!
Alan,
I was pleased to read your comment, I wrote on Garry Stevens board enquiring why does everyone want an offshore station or LBP to broadcast a "gold" type service? I was ridiculed (in a light hearted way) asking me to name 10 great songs from the last 18 months. It was easy, there is some great new music out there, it's just as you (and me said).......... anoraks are sounding like our parents!
What we really need is a station playing new music, but with DJ's presenting in a style for an older audience ie: no "shout " or "big up" for the "North Kent massive". I never thought I would say this, but almost Radio 2 (sorry), with a "North Sea pirate edge". So move with the times you sad old anoraks, and then you might get a station thats worth listening to.
Terry
Hi guys
Loving your broadcasts, it is great to hear something different and funny on the airwaves. Superb signal on 846 here in Dartford, I know this is in your broadcast area, so no great suprise there! Keep up the good work, enjoying every minute of the shows.

Much has been written about the BBC and its bid for F1. Saying that this is 'our money'. And how ITV doesn't use 'our money'. This is
pure codswallop as of course being advertising funded, ITV costs us
just as much when we pay the extra 1p here and 1p there to cover the advertising costs of products. And we then also have to sit through
ads and sponsorship messages. The BBC getting F1 is good IMHO.
They should also bid for Test Cricket as and when that comes up again.
You get people saying 'they are a publicly funded organisation' and
'not everyone likes sport'. But then not everyone likes serious documentaries, news programmes, arts programmes, soaps, plays films
etc and these form a large part of the BBC's output. Sport is just
one of the things that the BBC covers so well and is not in such a minority that it should be relegated to pay only channels.
IMHO of course !
Happy Easter to all.
Regards,
Geoff
Well said Steve – I see very little comment here concerning the 44th Birthday broadcasts live from the Ross at Tilbury – on the net, SW, Worldspace, cable and Digital Sat.
Is this because it is actually a really good broadcast and initiative from the Caroline team? Why has there been dozens of junk messages concerning Caroline Mattress here and alll the baggage that goes with it and next to nothing now other than comments from the usual suspects: – 'is it really from the Ross?'
Happy Birthday Radio Caroline and many happy returns.
I was thinking the same the forum is Anorak Nation, perhaps many who post can not see anything good at all with Caroline, and are more happy just moaning about everything thet try to do.

That's fair enough if you opt to buy the products they advertise, its a much fairer way. Rather than being forced to pay it and reduced to being a criminal if I don't, right now I do have a say because I'm forced to pay it and I don't like F1. So the Codswallop theory ain't quite right isn't it? You have choice in whether you buy say Cillit Bang that sponsors say F1. I have a choice to seek an alternative product and not fund the ever so annoying Cillit Bang Adverts.
People are like sheep nowadys and just accept being duped. One thing I know that ain't codswallop is that the BBC license fee has had its day, even Poland has dropped their License fee. This belief that all the BBC do is the best in the world is codswallop. Long Live BskyB, something that offers choice on demand, not pay and get what you are given. Would you do that in a resturant?

I like Caroline because it's got a big red boat. I'm saving up for some water wings so that I can apply to become a member and visit them.

But we all go to supermarkets/food stores/garages/off licences/pubs/restaurants, so unless we all sit at home and grow our
own food, generate our own electricity, and are totally self
sufficient, we all pay for ITV to a greater or lesser extent.
There's no getting away from it.

'In your opinion' I take it you're writing that you feel that the BBC
is not the best in the world? It has its good and bad points, and in
my opinion the BBC offers far better programming than ITV or BSKYB – apart from the premium Sky offerings. And the non premium Sky
offerings like Sky1 who cost a sub and advertise.
Long Live BskyB, something that offers choice on demand, not pay and get what you are given.
I subscribe to Sky because I want more sports and films than BBC/ITV offer. It is expensive, and at around £500 per year for the full package too much. But there's no other way. I'd like to just pay for the channels that I watch (eg parts of Sky 1, Sports 1 and the odd movie) but it doesn't work like that. IMHO, it is far more of a rip
off than the modest BBC sub (or licence fee as they insist on calling it).
I enjoy a good discussion, that's why AN is the best.

Yes, in part I agree but BskB, Virgin Media and the likes don't try to turn me into a criminal if I don't pay. Premium events such as F1 shoul be a pay per view event, as should any premier footbal game. If you want to watch it then pay, just like ifI want to watch a film. The license fee has had its day, its a totally unfair tax on telly. If they really wanted to get the license fee right, then they would add a fee on purchasing a TV or on electricity. The BBC Commercial division is quite successful in its own right and its about time something similar happened to conventional BBC licensing. Most of the Non-BBC license supported ventures I don't support and have no say in as a license fee payer. I don't have the choice to watch just commercial TV as I have to have a license whether I have a means of receiving any TV via Terrestrial Digital or whatever means. Thats obsurd!
Your example about having Sky TV proves this, such you for some reason just watch Sky, you are still forced to pay the BBC Tax (License) fee. It to me is like buying a BMW and having to pay BMW and Ford a service charge just because Ford demands it. Or you could even compare it to buying fish and chips and being forced to have a lamb shank with it and have to pay for it. The BBC has to go back to being a core service unless it goes totally commercial and shares an even playing field. Why should I fund part of endless BBC Radio 1,2 3,4,5,6 X, XX, XXX DAB services and a load of BBC Digital platforms I spend most of the time blocking on my set top box and still have the privaledge paying for it. So much for the freedom of choice. The BBC is a public service broadcaster, not a commercial entertainment company. Its a simple policy, pay for what you want, not pay for what you don't want.
I pay Virgin Media around £20 a month for 3 services including TV, I am more than happy with the service provided and the choice I have. I would gladly drop BBC programming from the services I currently have as I would live with out any BBC programming. The BBC was once a great broadcaster across its empire, like the empire, the BBC sunk with it. I too love debate Geoff, this is a great forum for all sorts.
No to the incriminating license fee!!
Yes to grannies racing round ASDA!!!
Quoting a previous RC Guff contribution:-

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
That would make it part of the commercial sector and would destroy its ability to be creative and take chances. It would end up being as bad as the rest.
or put the license fee on electricity
usage as normal countries seem to do?
I'm all for it being paid out of our taxes directly, like everything else is. It would cost a lot less not having to have a stupid collection and policing mechanism in place.
Sorry, I find watching grannies pushing shopping
trollies round ASDA more interesting than F1.
Is that a sexual fetish? I think we should be told!

Listening to
the programmes over this holiday weekend from the Ross have been
excellent and in my opinion certainly brings back the memories and the
feal of Caroline all them years ago.
Totally agree with you Steve. I first started to listen to Caroline in that fantastic summer of 76. The 192 during the day and 259 at night, then changing to 319 in 77 I believe. This weekend has been on a par with the cracking Red Sands Radio broadcast. Not sure if this would work all the time but it's bringing back some great memories of my great school summer holidays with Caroline blasting out in the garden and with my neighbour asking me how she could find that great music on my Radio. This weekend I'm an unashamed real person, listening to real music. Congratulations Caroline, you don't always get it right, but when she does I think I owe it to all involved to show my appreciation, good radio can be from anywhere and this has been great radio, the fact that they are on the Ross is a bonus, even if it wasn't used in the 70's,

pretty good.
Aha. A point well made.

Let me give you a bit of a heads-up to get you sounding a bit more in tune than you recently were in the eyes of your mates. There is quite a lot of this kind of stuff around, singles wise. It's a phase we're going through. I think it might be because of Mark Ronson and his Version album being flavour of the moment, and so it sort of spurs on other retero sounds. So, get digging into Mark Ronson, and see who he has guesting on his tracks (he doesn't sing), and then look into other things the vocalists are doing. Then you'll be back on track!
A good place to dig deeper is of course www.youtube.com but can I also recommend www.imeem.com for its ability to link recommendations and of course www.last.fm as a personalisable music stream. I love the last.fm concept, but do get a little frustrated at not being able to play exactly the track I'm looking for.
As for the state of radio, I find it fascinating that 40 years ago,
Ioathed the BBC, favouring commercial radio. Nowadays, I loathe what
commercial radio has become and really respect the BBC for what it's
doing, especially its specialist programming. In TV, BBC4 is an absolute
gem producing some of the best programming I've seen in years, knocking
spots off anything produced in the commercial sector.
Well said!

What about daytime Radio 1? Or maybe daytime XFM? I heard XFM on Saturday for a few hours and thought it was well-listenable to.
Interesting how XFM originally got rid of all its daytime presenters and just segued non-stop songs, but the audience plummeted. Now not only have presenters returned, but also they seem to be human and not doing that ridiculous coat-hanger in the mouth voice reading badly pre-written liners promoting the breakfast show.

Sorry to tell you that Caroline lost its big red boat to a bunch of scallys who stole it and use it for drunken weekend orgies with staff from their nursing homes.
