Kristel AM on 1188 kHz now until 4 pm GMT
Web stream of audio from a receiver:- http://skeleton.servemp3.com:8000/listen.pls
May be followed afterwards by a recording of Enigma TKR from last week.

Nothing now at 11.20, "Hubble Bubble Toilet Trouble" was merrily playing away, then it all went off. Hope its nothing too serious.

Lost programme on stream at 11.22 – just sideband splash going out now and Belgian stuff in background. Supertramp "Logical Song" playing at 11.28.

When Kristel was on, sounded like rig was a bit off channel – a low fq heterodyne or maybe PSU hum?

Well, actually, most Western European countries do actually operate research samples that end up polling nearly everybody in Western Europe. So, by that token, Big L Frinton should be dramatically appearing in those if you are right.

I've tried searching many ways on RAJAR site, but can find no trace of
Big L Radio.

Oddly, if a station has 'left' RAJAR it's normally noted in the comings and goings bit, and it ain't in there.

That's how I read it. However, the sample size is so tiny I don't think it's reliable. At the fringes of RAJAR samples, a single person saying they listen can be a tick for a thousand listeners, which I think is very faulty. Obviously this time, they picked samplers that hadn't heard of Big L.

Now that Caroline Maidstone has moved out of the plush TV and radio studios of Vinters Park, and has shuttled into somebody's spare bedroom, should it no longer be called 'Caroline Maidstone'? I'd vote for it to be renamed 'Bedroom Radio Caroline'! Anything better?

What about "Caroline on Satelite" ?

Or why not just call it "Radio Caroline" I know there are some people who have doubts (some of which might even be well founded) as to the "legitimacy" of the Maidstone outfit but until such time as someone with a better claim to the name actually manages to get a station on the air why not call it "Radio Caroline" ?

Calling it "Caroline Maidstone" suggests that there is some other "Caroline" out there. Maybe there is but Ive yet to pick it up on my radio.

Hans . <...> said:
harmonics could be stronger than under normal conditions because the
transmitter load would be different than the one it has been tuned to.

I see what your saying and its a valid point but the problem I had in mind would be down to the arcing itself rather than any secondary loading effects on the TX affecting the tuning circuits (or for that matter the stability of the output stage).

The diffence being that interference from the arcing would be spread across the entire waveband (and indeed run into adjacent bands) rather than affecting specific frequencies (like harmonics or spurious signals)

Anyway would the interference be strong enough to create any problems in the real world ?

I honestly think that the “difficulty” in having the studios based on the Ross is being exaggerated.

I mean once you find a suitable and cheap place to keep the ship docked and tied up if they still cant run a line directly to the Ross all they need to do is set up a link from the Ross to a nearby building (even a shed) on land and run the feed from there.

Depending on the distance it could be on 2.5 GHz (not necessarily WiFI) or even (if the building is VERY close) a 50nW FM broadcast band transmitter would do at a pinch.

Even if they had to pay for a licensed low power UHF link surely it would still be cheaper than hiring a studio in Maidstone (or wherever)

So where is this bedroom anyway? When did they move out of Maidstone Studios?

I may be imagining things, but the Worldspace signal has sounded much cleaner to me for the past day or so. Pity it's got only one month left to run.

Worldspace current offering comes to an end on 30th November, according to http://worldspace.com/maintenance/index.html

You able to pick this one up on your radio?

What about the Radio Caroline in Bristol some years ago? Or the Radio Caroline that was in Holland? That's without naming the groups and operations around the world (Japan, America, or even within the UK) using "Radio Caroline" as a trading name. Those folk in IOMIB also wanted to operate a "Caroline 279".

All very confusing, hence why "Bedroom Radio Caroline" tells you exactly which Caroline is being spoken about. Maybe "Caroline Mattress" is nearer to the "Caroline Maidstone" moniker. Should we use that?

I think it has gone from strength to strength, it moves at a pace that radio lost years ago. Great late night on the motorway coming home from meetings in London driving up the M1 / M6 after 10pm.

Well, if you listen you will hear new advertisers and things??

But they are getting into bed with them?????? and it took 13 years for UCB to get onto DAB, where do they get their money from............I know and it is wise management and a very good management that has enabled this to happen. I hope BigL goes the same route(DAB) in due course, though I think bigger and better AM may well be their course.......and that has digital opportunities you know.

Try UCB, not bad for nice soft easy listening as well as a few good words.

Well it's certainly unreliable. Remember how RAJAR had
the audience plunging after they switched 1.395 BACK
ON?
Which was a bit of a hoot to those of us who think
that the whole enterprise cheapens a once-great name,
but actually made no sense at all.
I had assumed that they used the same samplers every
time? Is that not so?

I could pick it up on my radio by plugging one of
those little transmitters into the Sky Box*. Please
keep up with the latest technology Grandad.
