Very sad news – I've listened to Arrow for years "in de auto op 675 AM". But good for them to get FM across Holland after such a long time.
But looking to the future, could 675 be the saviour for Big L? Thumping signal over the East of England day and night – even at 50kW would be infinitely better than 1395. Very tempting I'm sure. Or maybe 10 Gold returns to 675? Or those ousted from 10 Gold – www.radio1008.nl hire 675 and see if they can make it pay? Or how about this – Peter Moore puts Caroline on 675?
Exciting times ahead...

Hey, why not? I can pick them up this weekend quite nicely on 106.7FM, so Caroline might – at last – be anywhere and everywhere – just think :
279LW
675MW
various outlets (from Ireland) on SW
106.7FM
Worldspace
Sky 0199 and
the internet.
What's left? DAB and Freeview – leave these till next year...

Not wanting to be branded an 'apple anorak' thought I'd make the point
here that the current IPOD is not over priced 'crap' in my view.
Provided you get the thing from dealers prepared to offer a discount
(eg ebuyer.com etc) you can get a device for about the cost of an
equivalent Zen box.
Ah, but are you stuck with that ridiculous way of getting tunage across, or can you actually just copy things like it's a usb pen thang? And does the battery still blow-up after 3 days or whatever it was?
Battery power is an issue. My Nokia phone plays mp3s quite happily
and has a nifty FM radio, but it does eat battery power. How about mini
fuel cells to power portable devices ??
Ah, well, how long before that cordless recharging becomes the way ahead, eh?
We've come a long way from the days of phones only being available to make and receive calls, yet having to walk around with 27 spare batteries, so it can only get better and better I guess!

Now then. Now then. Isn't that a good thing? I mean if it's only anoraks that are tuning to AM, whilst the general public are tuning to FM, then surely they want and need to be on the platform normal people listen to? Their lack of audience is down to one of two things, really. Either a) people aren't happy with the waveband, or b) people aren't happy with the programming. If they move up to FM and still nobody is listening, then surely that proves it was the programming. If people do start to listen, then it proves it was the waveband.
Meanwhile, Chris Carey has expressed an interest on the 675 AM
frequency, which he states on his own message board he is "on the case".
Good luck to him. Sadly, I suspect he's wasting his time. I don't imagine he has an innovative and modern concept for programming that's going to pull a new and radical audience. And oldies music only stations are ten a penny and not really making RAJAR in an exciting way these days.

'Anorakness'
extends beyond radio, and it gives us a healthy scepticism of
officialdom and maybe a bit less willingness to conform.
A great quote; now on the front page of Anorak Nation!!
I'll never listen to Radio 1. If I
inadvertantly pass it while tuning across the band I never fail to utter
the word 'bastards' much to my wife's amusement.
It's such a shame. The truth is that it is actually quite a 'free radio' station now, alarming as that may sound.
Where once I was probably one of the 'get rid of the BBC' brigade, blaming them (and Radio 1) for all of life's ills and saying that commercial radio is the only true god, I now realise how wrong I was.
Commercial music radio is all but dead in this country. It is not the home of free expression or innovative music, or something to feel passionate about. Compare and contrast listening to Radio 1 (and I suspect the same is true of Radio 2). There are human beings presenting stuff on Radio 1. Not clones. Not 'doin a lot for charidy' Smashy and Nicey types (they've all moved to Big L!), but ordinary people. They have knowledge and are passionate about the music. The Radio 1 of now feels like an exciting vibrant place, a window on what's happening and innovative, and is everything we believe the radioships used to be.
The biggest mystery to me, watching Radio 1's RAJAR going up and up and up, is why the heck doesn't the commercial sector try to compete with it? Instead, they get rid of presenters, play safer and safer music, and try to compete with iPods!

Perhaps there are way too many stations, making it impossible to employ the knowledgeable staff?

I think there's enough new talent out there. It just has to be nurtured and allowed on the air rather than employing people to make announcements 3 times an hour.
The future is talking radio!
