By the way, I installed the latest version of Winamp yesterday, and
discovered that "AOL Radio with XM" is no longer listed under "Online
Services" in the Media Library. According to the Winamp forum, it has
been geo-filtered for the US only.

Just open media library then click on online services the browser window opens, at the bottom of that is AOL radio clear the tick in the box then put it back and AOL radio appears in your Library pane.

Shirley you've gotta admit they played music of worth? I cite the album rock of caroline (which was my favourite period) and the pop of laser/earlier caroline neither of which were catered for on legal stations at the time.
Come to think of it, album rock still isn't catered for on proper radio.

Yes. In any case, that was more about conning the workers and supporters to put their cash or labour into the operation until they had no more energy or were all used up. I remember a great big lecture at me from Ronan about how to be subtle about it and how to introduce it into conversation when it looked like somebody might be thinking about leaving.

So it just was a fleece the hippies scam job? I'm shocked, horrified but somewhat unsurprised.
Didn't straight presenters promote it as well as tony allen, so why was it "gay"?

Unfortunately not. planetary awareness would seem to be at a very low ebb at this time.

Sadly mine doesn't. All I hear is Boom-di-boom dance or Sugababes and Take That.

Well, it originally might have been well-meaning, and the heavy dope heads like Tony Allen sort of really believed it, but I'd blame too much wacky-backy, pills and powders and the paranoid mental condition it leaves humans with. Besides which, all LA was was Buddhism badly re-packaged.

~

it "gay"?

Were there straight presenters on Caroline? Blimey, I thought you had to be gay to work in radio.

But, I jest of course. (Some people in radio aren't gay, as there are equal opportunities nowadays allowing straights in.)

No, the word 'gay' as applied in the phrase 'LA is gay' is the modern use of the word 'gay' (check out an Urban Dictionary) which has no connection with sexual preference. However, 'LA is gay' does have a rhyme to it...!

~

planetary awareness would seem to be at a very low
ebb at this time.

Especially when you consider this lunacy of blaming humans for global warming, and the complete inability of the dope-heads to know what's really going on. These were the same fools who told us the world would come crashing to a standstill at the end of the Millennium. And they celebrated the new Millennium a whole year early! Hippies, eh? Now they're in Government and run t'ings with their touchy feely crap, what chance has reality got? Hey, maybe when the Tories get in it will all be ok and fluffy and safe again. Yeah, right. (Can't help but be completely addicted to
http://www.webcameron.org.uk though. Brilliant site)

You wanna buy yourself a modern radio, mate. Mine has multiple choice when it comes to rock music.

A few beers and a spliff or two never spoiled a radio show, but I'd imagine pills and powders would.

Chris mate, you don't have to justify your sexuality to us with this feeble camp pretence of poetry, we're all friends here and non-judgemental. Your coming out is hopefully a liberating experience for you.

You mean one of those soon to be doorstop DAB radios?

Steve Leyland
 "I went to the Garden of Love, And saw what I never had seen;
A Chapel was built in the midst,
Where I used to play on the green.

And the gates of this Chapel were shut
 And "Thou shalt not," writ over the door;
So I turned to the Garden of Love
That so many sweet flowers bore.

And I saw it was filled with graves,
 And tombstones where flowers should be;
And priests in black gowns were walking their rounds,
And binding with briars my joys and desires."

Not sure that listeners to Rowland Rivron recently on BBC London's breakfast show agreed.

As will all one-way only 'radios' soon. We'll look back on the concept of 'one way' broadcasting in a few years and laugh and point at it in the way we do at gramophone records these days.

I had one of them AM radio things once. Not had a working one for years. The remains of the last one I had makes a nice end-stop for a bookshelf.

No, tell a lie, I've a box full of tiny Virgin target tuners somewhere that I stole, erm, liberated (or even Liberaced) from the prize cupboard, although they also do FM, so probably don't count.

I believe a thread about that got deleted from DS (What a surprise!).

I didn't hear it, only read about it, but did wonder if it was a stunt for Comic Relief Day or something but maybe not.

Speaking of that and with the subject of bullying having been in the media a lot in recent weeks is it not about time that the horrendous victimisation of certain people be brought to an end.

It must surely be wrong that any individual be made the object of ridicule and humiliation just because of the colour of his or her nose.

Maybe it's a celebration of the affliction, ney, lifestyle choice of the nose colour. After all, we do have Black History Month, International Women's Day, Islamic Awareness Week, a Mother's Day, a Father's Day, etc., etc., and I'm told each is a 'celebration'.

I'm pretty sure (although I may be wrong) that today is, for example, not set aside for the bullying, ridicule and humiliation of anybody who happens to be a mother.

Christopher Dahlink, I would never wish such a thing upon you as being a talentless fat pooftah who plays a piano. I know you are sooo much better at stringed instruments...

I still have some of those black gramophone vinyl thingies and I'll have you know young man that with a decent turntable (Tandberg Thorens TD160 with ADC VLM Cartridge) that they sound pretty damn good. I get much better bass response from vinyl than CDs.
when will everyone wake up to the fact that just because it says "digital" it is not always better?

The fact that you would see it in such a positive light is an indication of just what a kind-hearted and good-natured person Christopher England really is. It certainly puts your knockers to shame that's for sure.

I can tell you though that I have friends who have red noses, it just so happens that they were born that way. Part of the rich and varied tapestry of life.

They tell me that they suffer weeks of mockery by imitation which is worse than the black and white minstrels as it carries the implication that they look funny just because of the colour of the skin of their nose.

Anyone who has participated in this "red noses are a joke" thing in any way at all is vile for doing so.

Did you join the campaign after they reduced the speed from 78 rpm to 33.3 rpm? I thought that was outrageous. I mean, they started squeezing audio into less than half of what was originally allocated to it! All just so that the record companies could rip us all off, the bastards. They lied to us and said it would all get cheaper, but the prices of 33.3 rpm gramophone records just went up and up. And where was our assurance that there'd be no more clicks and sticks? All rubbish it was. Hurumph.

Surely the element of fun and jollity that is added into the proceedings surrounding such things as the paralympics, including the one time use of gentlemen in wheelchairs as a high rotation station logo for BBC1 TV, is not meant as an action of denigration or abuse, but one of celebration.

'Having a red nose can be fun', is what's being said. Indeed, look at the enjoyment that a red nose represents to children. Santa Claus always has a red nose, and let's not forget that were it not for the very red nose of one of his reindeers he'd not be able to find all the children to deliver their presents. As children become aware of Rudolph's nose, they don't mock it but celebrate it.

At the end of the day, red noses are out there. Are we to ignore them and avert our eyes, or not look at a red-nose-ee in the face as we talk to him or her, hoping to avoid the 'n' word? That's got to be worse that celebrating it, surely?

Thanks Dave. I did actually get it back before your post solely by rebooting my pc for a second time. No other action was required. :-)
