Richard, sir, you'll be pleased to see that following your pointing out
that the threads had gone wrong and weren't displaying with the last
contributed to at the top, and me passing this on to the powers that be,
they've fixed it for you!

Thanks Chris although i now have another problem with AN,

I find that every time i switch my computer off and then restart it later on AN has forgotten my log in details and i have to go though the motions although i do click the remember me button,

This is a new thing which is very annoying and doesn't happen on other sites.

Just tried to log-on to the Caroline Forum thing and it be gone! Has
it moved somewhere else or does this mean that Peter Moore has viciously
silenced free chatter about Caroline? Eh? Eh? I think we should be
told!

I always thought you were behind it and for whatever reason decided it wasn't worth keeping going!

...and I guess you started the original BigL board (proboards) too.

Me too, two or three days now.

So then. Whatever happened to DRM? Why wasn't it the saviour we were
promised it would be?

Apart from in the UK and a bit in Denmark DAB has failed miserably. Electronic manufacturers won't like another failure, so they are reluctant. Combined DAB-DRM sets will only be of interest to the UK market. DAB has reincarnated itself by defining the DAB+ standard that will allow more stations and/or better quality (lower cost per channel!). So what sets should they produce? And then there's the DVB-H standard to confuse things.

On what horse should an electronics company bet?

I had my first ears-on experience of a DAB radio last week round at a mate's house. I'm sure there was some music there underneath the garbling underwater type noise, but suffice to say I wasn't at all impressed.

Hi Hans I am glad i am not the only one!! Ever since the migration to Mailspaces i find AN not so good and often is down or there is some other problem.

That's a difficult one. I'm one of the 'believers' that conventional through-air 'radio' directly to a 'radio' has had its day for this part of the world, so if I were an electronics company I wouldn't be looking to back any non-multi-media single purpose horse.

It's a similar to the early experiences of VHF. Remember those? People anoraking on about it, yet all you could hear was this hissing noise unless you held the antenna all the time. Woe betide anybody daring to move around in the room! And the FM anoraks of the day would tell you how wonderful this thing called 'stereo' was. But it got better.

I think DAB will get better, but no single through-air one-way only delivery mechanism will survive for too long, so it will always be a back burner thang.

Not me. I'd have kept it going.

That one I did, then they put in on board their own servers. Proboards was/is quite sexy software. Do you think the anti-Christopher England brigade will start using one?

* Christopher England just said that *

Give it another 5 or 6 years and all will be ok! :-)

I get AN via plain text email and am seeing some characters strangely
being replaced by —

I've flagged that up too

Proboards runs reliably so I would prefer every board to use it :-)
On the idea of having an anti board for any person I would say I don't care because I would not use it.

Maybe Anorak Nation should move to it!

Both DAB(+/DMB) and DVB-H have been designed to deliver reliable data streams. They can be used for all kinds of content as long as it can be contained in a data stream.

Currently work is underway to expand DRM to be able to deliver exactly the same thing. The advantage is you can use it for community or small local use because you don't need as much content to fill up a multiplex. It will probably be limited to around 150 kbps while DAB/DVB typically deliver 8 to 20 times more. With very low capacity the system can also be used on short wave to get a very large range. The question is if typical users are going to need the latter.

Hi Nico welcome back to AN, Sorry i have no idea on the present state of
the Communicator, The last i heard the Harbour master up there had
bought it and it was quietly rusting away in the same place.

Cut it up and sell it on ebay!

I mean, I'd buy a bit.
