Quoting a previous Graham Jones HKt.B Jones contribution:-

Now Christopher …. what defines an old person … is it age, attitude
or a combination of the two ?

I think mainly it's attitude. Sadly, with older chronological age comes
older attitude in the main, but there are exceptions to this general
rule, as I previously mentioned – John Peel and Annie Nightingale are
classic examples. There are also a number of really really old
(chronologically) music producers out there too, making some of the new
genres and new music waves (mainly in Germany and Japan I note).

Oh, and into which category of person would you put CE?

Nineteen eh? Doesn't that make you a probabtionary member sonny JIm ? !!!

Further to your comments on what I stated on Chris Carey's Website, which is quoted below:

"unlike one, which is so like "Last of the Summer Wine" a few old men who go on and on about the past – going round in circles and one keeps bringing up Caroline and having a pop at LW279! – Sad!!"

I completely withdraw the above comments, as the site "Anorak Nation" feels and I quote:

"Christopher England said in reply: What in the world has the way you claim I act got to do with your defence about the way you suddenly launched your unprovoked rude attack on Anorak Nation? Try seeing that work in a Court of Law!

How can you claim to be above what you suggest I do, when you do worse and without any provocation!"

It was never my intention for what I said above on the Chris Carey thread to be an "Unprovoked Rude Attack"

Now I call on Christopher England to fully withdraw the uncalled for slur on my personal and professional character on "Anorak Nation"

Now then. Polls are in your control. If you can think of a poll, it's
over to you to set it up!

All you do is STOP.

Then, have a really good think about the question and the alternative
answers that would be fun to run.

Next, carefully fire off a new thread/message (from the website) with a
few words of explanation and click on 'Attach Poll'.

Fill in the question and the various options you want to offer for
others to vote on, and when you are happy it's all making sense and
spelt well proper, send it.

It'll get queued and appear on the front of the Anorak Nation homepage
when it's next possible.

So, it's all in your control!

Ok let's have an "I think Xmas is ...."    poll

I think Xmas is  (a) Superfine

                       (b)  Pretty damned good

                       (c)  It's a welcome break

                       (d)  It's OK

                       (e)  Not keen

                       (f)  Can't wait till it's over

                       (e)  WOFT (waste of time)

Cheers (and er humm Happy Xmas)

Ah those debates that we had at school, (BETHS) we didn't encounter any of this form of bickering there did we! Or did we?
Everyones memories and perceptions seem to cloud with age, or In my case alcohol!

What streaming rate over the internet compares in quality terms with analogue AM radio? Would 22 kbit/s be a good guess?

What would be the streaming rate for DRM?

That bit-rate sounds about right – But in order to "replicate" the frequency response (or lack of), a sample-rate of 11025Hz is also required...

Its not so much the bitrate that matters, but the format being used
DRM uses AAC+ which at around 25 Kbps stereo gives comparable sound to mp3 at 64 Kbps or higher. Some of the Broadcasters on DRM use bitrates as low as 9 Kbps but they are only broadcasting speech in mono.

Most people streaming on the net using whatever format wouldn't use any thing less than 44100Hz but then it wouldn't sound like AM.

See, now to me this isn't what Radio 1 should be doing. That old school
stuff should be on Radio 2, and if the genre (as in Pete Tong's music)
is now no longer today's thang, then surely it has no place on Radio 1.

It's bad enough weekends being ruined by Sunday morning oldies with that

obnoxious Vernon Kay, but now you've still got people on the air like
Sara Cox who want to talk nearly non-stop about how touch it is being a
wealthy single mum. During the week in contrast, Jo Whiley, despite
being an old person and a mum certainly manages to talk intelligently
about the music, the artists, the gigs – and that's what those that
'trust' new music want to hear, not all this stuff that should be
shuttled off to Radio 2.

I don't agree. Radio 2 isn't the place to hear 90's "old school" dance. in fact a lot of the yoof like to hear it, as can be judged by "your call".

Sara Cox, however is intensly irritating talking garbage for long periods, and other djs are iffy, but I suppose that's the nature of the beast.

Westwood is excellent, as is Judge Jules, and Trevor nelson does a grand job with the dance anthems. Zane Lowe 99% of the time focuses on the new music. JK & Joel do a damn good chart show, despite their tribute to Fluff Freeman last Sunday, and I suppose it wasn't really out of place.

All in all despite Chris's critisisms, I think radio 1 is ok, but I didn't like the way the specialist programmes have been shunted to the later spots. Bobby friction and Nihal's programme used to be on at 9pm, and I miss that, despite the later spot. That really is cutting edge music!

Hmmm... Some use 22050Hz, but I agree that 44100Hz is the norm. But for the "AM sound", you'd want a max frequency response of about 5KHz, so that means a sample rate of 11025Hz.

Question is, how do you replicate an inverted-V/long-wire on Winamp ?

Charlie,

AM has no lack of frequency response.

It's the poor receiver designs.

Before the US introduced the NRSC AM bandwidth standard the better mediumwave stations could broadcast quality audio way out to 20KHz, better than FM's 15KHz.

There are some off-air recordings on the web of stations such as WLW and Canada's CKLW in Harris AM Stereo where the quality defies any FM on the dial – even today.

In fact if you disconnect any internal limiting and wound all controls to 11 most current model Nautel MW transmitters can modulate out to 50KHz and up to 200% positive peak mod.

However you'd upset the neighbours!
