From http://blogs.rnw.nl/medianetwork/?p=6483:

Sales of digital TV equipment have overtaken analogue for the first time, according to research released yesterday. The findings from Digital UK, the independent organisation leading the nationwide switch to digital TV, show that in the three months to September, combined sales of digital televisions, set top boxes and recorders accounted for 51% of all television equipment sold.

but where dose that leave DAB then

I haven't got a clue. I'm also wondering why the article mentions nothing about unicyling, or polevaulting, or even the depletion of fishing stocks.

I guess the reason is probably to do with the fact that the quoted article is about television. But that's just a guess.

I had to look this up. In fact it's 400 Watts RMS into two ohms. 225 Watts RMS into 4 ohms, which would still need massive power cables and a massively uprated alternator to avoid getting a flat battery in double quick time.

Add to that the fact that it's only twice the subjective loudness of a twenty watt amplifier - which is plently loud enough, all I can say is that fools and their money are soon parted.

Thank you, Peter.

So it appears that Maplin is headlining the input power. Indeed, it's a bit sad that the "loudness" is only doubled, but it's perception that counts in marketing.

Presumably, to subjectively double the loundness again would need to trailer plus generator.

Well the 800 watts relates to 'burst power' i.e the ability of the amplifier to deliver a few cycles of 'music' waveform before the power supply reservoir capacitors go flat. The rms power is the power that can be delivered continuously.

As to what the efficiency and therefore power demands are, well that's anybody's guess.

To deliver such power levels, even with a bridged amplifier, (that's two power amplifiers connected across the loudspeaker in antiphase) requires far more voltage than a mere car battery can provide. So there has to be a switched mode power supply in there, chopping up the input dc voltage from the battery to make a very dirty pseudo a.c. supply, fed through a voltage step-up transformer, rectified and smoothed, to finally generate a high enough voltage to supply the amplifiers.

All the gen about subjective loudness was discovered by Alexander Graham Bell, donkey's years ago. A doubling of subjective loudness was called a Bel, which was such a large amount that convention dictated that we used the decibel when measuring power ratios. A doubling of power is a ratio of 3 dB, which is, subjectively, very little difference indeed.

So, to bring this topic back to radio, if Big L (or whatever they call themselves these days) were to manage to get permission to double their output power, nobody would perceive much significant improvement to their signal at all.

For those who haven't been there it reads as follows:

IOMBI BAD NEWS :NEW !
IOM Canceld
IOMBI 279 License is revoked .

KAT has cancelled the IOMB CFA License , because the IOMB is financially dead and could not pay KAT the CFA license fees for the many last years .

Consequently the IOMB 279 license is obviously revoked too , since it was awarded based on using the CFA .

KAT is not responsible for any funds raised into the IOMB by new investors or shareholders .

Is this website for real? There seems a lot of rubbish on there. I'm not technically minded, but all this crap about CFA'S helping DAB and DRM and that stupid picture of a CFA on ship, it must be a windup.

As for Musicmann 279, that debate was done to death on AN. The basic opinion seemed to be, it was a great idea and maybe it would have had a chance at the start of the decade, but it missed it's time,
